This a hot topic in Gena's blog, some other blogs have also made reference to it to build more discussion. It is interesting to see where people stand on this issue. Vaccines have eggs and gelatin. Gena on her blog states the point of vaccinations are to preserve life then why do vaccines use gelatin and eggs? Vaccinations need to be looked at for alternatives in their content so everyone can be included in using them.
She is stuck in a quandary, since her job requires her to be vaccinated because she is working with children. She understands the importance of vaccinations and their requirement to not only avail her, but the children she comes in contact with. The only question is why do vaccines only have two exemptions? They are religious views, and egg allergies.
People with egg allergy are a given on why they can not receive the vaccine. If a person has religious views against vaccines, why could she not receive an exemption based on her vegan lifestyle? It is no different. Her views are not religious, but are based on her moral grounds. Veganism helps structure moral grounds with learning and distinguishing what is benign and malign. She asks a series of questions to think about and discuss:Until vegan vaccines exist, how do we handle the vaccines we have? What about medications? Many prescription and OTC drugs are not vegan. Yet they are vital to people suffering from physiological and mental illness. How do you feel about them? Do we reject them, or do we put them in the context of “we all do our best?” When comes to vaccines, do you think that veganism should be observed as a grounds for exemption if religion is?
She goes through the pros and cons of vaccines, it is definitely a good read and thought provoking. Read the full post at choosing raw.
